Hi, I’m Jo. I grew up in a world that wasn’t built for me. As a visually impaired child, diagnosed from birth, every step was a challenge, every question an unanswered echo. There was no guidebook, no hand to consistently hold mine—just a gnawing sense of being different, of navigating a world that seemed determined to keep me in the shadows. The unfairness of that isolation, the struggle for acceptance and understanding, is a part of me I still carry.
A New Journey as a Parent
Then came my child. The moment you hold your newborn in your arms, the world shifts. It’s a love so overwhelming, so profound, that it takes your breath away. But what happens when that joy is intertwined with a diagnosis that changes everything?
The diagnosis of visual impairment hit me with a force I hadn’t anticipated. It wasn’t just a medical term—it was a flashback, a wave of the loneliness I had fought so hard to overcome. My world tilted on its axis. The dreams I once had for my child suddenly felt blurry and uncertain. But amidst the fear, something else ignited—a fierce, protective love and an understanding that ran deeper than words. Because I knew. I knew the hurdles, the frustrations, the quiet battles fought every single day. And in that moment, a promise was born: my child would never feel the isolation I once did.
Finding Strength in Connection
Our journey together has been one of incredible connection. We speak a language that only shared experience can forge. We celebrate the small victories that others might overlook, and we face the bigger challenges with a united front, armed with empathy and unwavering support. My child has taught me resilience in a whole new light, and I, in turn, can offer the guidance and validation I so desperately craved as a child.

Here, within the LOOK family, I have found my place. Surrounded by colleagues who share the same passion and commitment, I feel a sense of belonging I’ve rarely experienced. We are a team driven by a shared vision: a future where every visually impaired child has the opportunity to thrive. We give people voices, and they are heard.
That’s why working for LOOK is more than just a job; it’s a calling. It’s a chance to dismantle the very barriers I faced, to ensure that other visually impaired children and their parents don’t have to navigate the darkness alone. We build community, foster understanding, and create the resources that were so desperately missing in my own childhood.
The Incredible Dedication of Our Runners
And then there are our London Marathon runners. I am privileged to work alongside them and be a small part of their journey. I am filled with pride for these incredible humans—many with no direct connection to visual impairment—who push their bodies to the absolute limit, mile after mile, all to make sure our vital work can continue. They are the beating heart of LOOK. Each pounding step is a testament to their dedication and compassion.
Standing on the sidelines on marathon day, cheering them on, I am witnessing their incredible effort. I am filled with immense gratitude. They choose to push their physical limits, to endure discomfort, all to shine a light on our charity and the incredible work we do. They are tangible proof that people care—really care—that change is possible—really possible.
