Ever wondered what it’s like to be a professional musician if you’re visually impaired? Or maybe you’re a VI young person considering a career in music, but you don’t where to start?
Watch below to catch up on Rupert’s conversation with professional Classical and Jazz pianist, Rachel Starritt.
From Bridgend, South Wales, pianist Rachel Starritt, who has been unsighted from birth, is classically trained and also one of the rising stars of the jazz scene in Wales and beyond. She has received formal classical training in piano with Alison Bowring at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) from 2006, and is currently a postgraduate student at RWCMD, where she continues to demonstrate extraordinary musicianship and piano improvisation skills.
Rachel completed a six-month Erasmus placement at the Conservatori Liceu in Barcelona under the tutelage of Alba Ventura. Rachel also has a talent for languages with fluency in both Welsh and Spanish and conversational competence in French and Italian.
Rachel is a member of the British Paraorchestra and has been involved in several performances including Glastonbury in 2019.
