This year, we were thrilled to return to the festival site to carry out an accessibility audit, helping to ensure that blind and visually impaired families feel welcome, comfortable, and included.
We also sat down with Charlie, HAY’s Health and Safety Manager, to talk about what it really takes to make a large public event accessible from the ground up.

What Makes a Festival Accessible?
As part of the day, we also heard directly from LOOK CEO Charlotte, who offered first-hand guidance for event designers.

What truly makes an event accessible?
- Feeling welcome from the very first interaction.
- A website that’s screen-reader friendly and clearly explains the event.
- The ability to easily book companion tickets.
- A clear description of what’s on, what support is available, and how to navigate the venue.
- Before I arrive, I want to know what to expect, from accessible menus to site maps. That way, I feel confident and included.
Above all, accessibility starts with attitude. Even if a space isn’t perfectly designed, a welcoming, respectful, and willing-to-listen approach from staff and organisers can transform someone’s experience. The right mindset, one that values inclusion and is open to learning, can make the event feel fully inclusive.

Thank You
Huge thanks to Charlie and the HAY Festival team for continuing to listen, learn, and grow with us. And thank you to our amazing LOOK families for your insight, and your openness.
