The LOOK Mentor of the Month Award aims to show our appreciation at LOOK for all the hard work the mentor team does for us as volunteers for our charity. Charlie has been chosen as Mentor of the Month (MOTM) for January 2023. Our first Mentor of the New Year!
LOOK London Mentor Project worker, Shani Dutta, says why she nominated Charlie:
“Charlie, in your mentoring partnership, you continue to be very open and consistent with your mentees. Your willingness to share and help others, working hard to support and create a friendship in your partnerships will forever be praised. At LOOK we feel very honoured to have you as a mentor and we appreciate you for your endless efforts with the project.
Thank you Charlie for your thoughtful approach to mentoring, and your dedication to your mentees.”
A message from Charlie’s mentee
“I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to you Charlie, and to LOOK UK. You’ve helped me a lot. You’ve supported me as I started my first job after university and given me some really useful advice on how to advocate for myself, manage my sight loss in the workplace and develop in my career.
My confidence generally has improved, and I feel better able to manage my visual impairment from the advice and support you have given. Thanks for all that you have done.”
Meet Charlie
My name is Charlie, and I’m a Civil Servant living in London. I’ve been mentoring with Look since 2021. Look’s mission of supporting visually impaired young people to thrive chimed with me: because I know I had a lot of help from many professionals, colleagues and friends, which I’m keen to pay forward to others.
I enjoy mentoring, and find the experience very rewarding. Particularly when I am able to work through an issue that my Mentees are experiencing, and we find a suitable solution together.
My advice to help other mentors with their partnerships is always take time to understand your mentee’s concerns, asking relevant follow-up questions if anything is unclear. Then check back in later, to understand the impact any suggestions you make has had.
