Every day in the UK, four children begin to lose their sight. For young people and their families, this can feel overwhelming. Questions about school, friendships, independence and the future are common, and it’s not always clear where to find support.

LOOK combats isolation and boosts confidence by connecting visually impaired (VI) young people and their families with mentors who have lived experience of sight loss. Our mentors empower them to overcome challenges, stay engaged in education, and build independence for the future. We also provide our mentors with training and opportunities to enhance their own employability. As the UK’s only VI mentoring service, we believe that with the right support, every VI child can thrive.

For one week only, you can make twice the difference. During the Big Give Christmas Challenge, every pound you donate is matched, helping us reach our target of £10,000 in 7 days — unlocking £20,000 of support for the young people who need us.

Why your support matters

Receiving a sight loss diagnosis can be devastating, often leaving children and young people feeling isolated.

LOOK is here to give young people the tools, advice and encouragement they need to navigate life with confidence. We offer a lifeline, guiding them through the challenges of sight loss and connecting them with a supportive community of visually impaired peers, showing they are not alone.

What your donation can do

Your gift — doubled during the Big Give — helps us provide the community and support that young people tell us they desperately need. You’ll be helping us recruit and train new mentors, run workshops and events, create resources for families, and support young people through key milestones like starting secondary school or preparing for exams.

A donation of just £80 with Gift Aid and with The BigGive match funding becomes £200. This is enough to train a new visually impaired LOOK mentor who, by sharing their own lived experiences, can provide valuable guidance and make a real difference in the lives of visually impaired young people facing similar challenges.

Hear from the young people we support

Zac, aged 16, has a Cerebral Visual Impairment, which causes severe sight loss. For a long time, school was a daily struggle, and without the right support, he often felt anxious and overwhelmed. Everything changed when Zac’s Mum found LOOK and signed him up for our peer mentoring scheme.

"LOOK mentoring sessions weren’t just about support—they were about friendship, kindness, and sometimes just having a laugh. Now, I’m settling well into my new school and look forward each week to reporting my progress to my mentor. LOOK mentoring has been life-changing. Are you are parent looking for fun activities to do with your kids?

Why not host a bake sale at school, work or in your community? You could organise a fun games night at home or with neighbours or plan a sponsored walk. Choose a favourite local route and invite people to sponsor your child.

Are you a teacher, or does your child attend a school that would be willing to support LOOK?

Organise a non-uniform day or join us on the 5th December for our #JumperThatGives challenge. Run an assembly on visual impairment and invite families to support the Big Give. Or set up a reading marathon, asking people to sponsor pupils to read as many pages as they can during the Big Give week.

Get your office involved!

You could invite your company to match staff donations to The Big Give. Host a relaxed workplace coffee morning or snack shop. Or set up a staff steps challenge, asking people to donate to join a lunchtime walk or team activity.

Every donation, no matter the size, will help make a difference.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge

The Big Give Christmas Challenge kicks off at 12 pm on the 2nd of December to the 9th of December at 12 pm. From that moment, the LOOK Big Give donation button will be live, offering you the opportunity to double your impact. If we reach our £10,000 target, our match funders will turn it into £20,000 — money that goes straight into supporting blind and partially sighted young people access life-changing programmes like peer mentoring, community events, and family support groups.
