Jamie’s Farm, a charity dedicated to equipping young people to flourish through a unique blend of farming, family and therapy, provided the perfect setting for this remarkable journey filled with laughter, learning and life-changing experiences.

Immersing Ourselves in Farm Life

Our time at Jamies Farm was filled with activities from tending to farm animals to cooking communal meals and going on walks through the Herefordshire countryside.

Day 1: Settling In

The adventure began with a warm welcome from the Jamie’s Farm team. As mentees explored the farm’s surroundings, the initial nerves started to melt away. Icebreaker activities led by LOOK mentors helped everyone to feel relaxed and excited about the week ahead!

Day 2: Getting Hands-On with Farm Life

The second day was all about immersing ourselves in farm life. Mentees rolled up their sleeves and got involved in tasks like feeding the animals, mucking out stables, and collecting eggs.

“I never thought I’d have the courage to lead a horse, but with the support of my peers and mentors, I did it!” LOOK Mentee

Day 3: Exploring Nature

With the farm as our backdrop, we embarked on a scenic hike. Guided by the Jamies Farm team we navigated through streams and hiked up hills. Enjoying the sound and smells of the countryside and being cheered on by a team sing-a-long. With tired legs, some of the team felt the best way home was to roll down the hill, much to the enjoyment of the rest of the team!

Before long we were back at the farm, grouped around the campfire sharing stories and laughter after another brilliant day on the farm.

Day 4: Cooking up a Storm

Day four brought out our culinary skills. In the farm’s cosy kitchen, mentees and mentors worked together to prepare hearty meals from scratch. From grating vegetables to cooking French toast, each task was an opportunity to work together and learn new skills. Making the food as a team made meal times all the more delicious, giving us all the opportunity to enjoy our hard work and each other’s company!

No family meal is complete without a sing-along! Once the plates were cleared, with the help of the talented team at Jamie’s Farm, we split into groups to compose our own songs. The brief was to capture the essence of Jamie’s Farm, and as you can see from this video—and all the laughter—the group perfectly showcases the creativity and unity that Jamie’s Farm inspires.

Day 5: Garden Adventures and Farewells

The final day was bittersweet. With the sun shining, we headed out into the garden to admire the incredible fruit and vegetables grown on the farm. We then rolled up our sleeves and planted seeds in preparation for the spring.

Afterwards, it was time to gather and reflect on our week together. We shared the highs and lows of our experiences and celebrated the friendships we formed, before finally saying our goodbyes.

Building Lifelong Connections

The impact of the week was profound. The residential wasn’t just about the activities; it was about the connections formed. Mentees left Jamie’s Farm with a network of friends and mentors who truly understand their journey and with a renewed sense of confidence and belief that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

Central to the experience was the presence of our four LOOK mentors, who, alongside the LOOK team, offered guidance and support drawn from their own experiences. Their insights and encouragement were invaluable in helping mentees realise their potential.

This incredible week at Jamie’s Farm was a powerful reminder that with the right support and environment, we can all achieve more than we ever imagined.
